NASA Scrubs Launch Due to Bad Weather

NASA Scrubs Launch Due to Bad Weather

Poor weather conditions around the KSC Complex forced Launch Director Pete Nickolenko to scrub today's launch of Endeavour.  Anvil clouds and storm cells containing lightning moved in to the area toward the end of the countdown, violating stringent launch criteria and safety rules.  This the third scrub in as many days.

It will be a 48 hr. scrub turn around.  Missions Managers will hold a briefing this evening to discuss the next launch date.  At this time Wednesday is the target with a launch window that opens at 6:03:10pm and closes at 6:08:10pm.

STS-127 launch scrubbed due to weather concerns

A 24 hour scrub turn around is in place for another launch attempt Monday for Endeavour at 6:51pm.

"We got the vehicle ready, but the weather didn't cooperate," Launch Director Pete Nickolenko told Endeavour's seven astronauts.   Weather was "No Go" due to thunderstorms within 10 nautical miles of the Shuttle Landing Facility.  That runway would be needed in the event of an emergency landing after lift off.   NASA launch criteria states that no storms can be within 20 nautical miles of the Shuttle Landing Facility.  Closeout Crews are in the process of helping Endeavour's seven crew member out of the shuttle and performing other closeout duties.

NASA TV coverage will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday, and as always, you can watch it Live on Channel 12, the Education Channel.

UPDATE: The STS-127 Mission Management Team will hold a meeting Monday at 8:45am to discuss Endeavour and weather conditions for tomorrow's launch.  Tanking will begin at the earliest at 9:26am.

Careful Testing Under Way After Lightning Strikes

Sat, 11 Jul 2009 11:59:52 AM EDT

The launch of space shuttle Endeavour was postponed until Sunday evening so engineers could evaluate the spacecraft's myriad systems following 11 lightning strikes in the Launch Complex 39A area.

None of the strikes hit the shuttle or its external tank and solid rocket boosters, but there were strikes to the lightning mast and water tower. The launch pad is equipped with a lightning protection system of wires that is intended to steer bolts away from the shuttle.

"We've seen nothing so far that shows anything affected any of the systems," said Mike Moses, chairman of the pre-launch Mission Management Team.

Two of the strikes were strong enough to trigger an evaluation by engineers just to make sure all of Endeavour's systems are ready for flight. Although early evaluations showed no problems, engineers wanted more time to make sure they have checked everything correctly.

Countdown to tonight's launch continues

Countdown to tonight's launch continues

The countdown continues for tonight's launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Crews began retracting the Rotating Service Structure at 11pm Friday night and NASA's launch team will meet for a weather briefing at 9:30am this morning.  The weather continues to be the only issue for lift off tonight with only a 40% chance of "go" for launch.

The 16-day mission will feature five spacewalks as the crews of Endeavour and the International Space Station work to install the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module Exposed Facility and Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section on the ISS.

Tanking is scheduled to begin at 10:44am and coverage will begin on NASA TV at 10am.  The STS-127 launch is scheduled for 7:39pm.   You can watch mission coverage LIVE on Channel 12, the Education Channel.

Endeavour, Crew Preparing for July 11 Launch

Thu, 02 Jul 2009 12:25:36 PM EDT

Launch preparations are under way at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida following Wednesday's successful test fueling of space shuttle Endeavour's external tank.

Two previous attempts to launch Endeavour on the STS-127 mission were halted by a leak in the area of the Ground Umbilical Carrier Plate, which attaches a gaseous hydrogen vent line to the external tank. After several days of investigation and repair work, the massive orange tank was filled with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as controllers watched for evidence of leaks. The system performed well, verifying the success of the repair.

"There were absolutely no leak indications whatsoever noted on the two leak detectors," said Launch Director Pete Nickolenko. "We'll continue to look at the data, and our next step is to move toward launch."

Endeavour's astronauts are taking the holiday weekend off and will go into quarantine Sunday evening. They are due to arrive at Kennedy on July 7 at 2 p.m. EDT. The countdown will officially begin Wednesday at 10 p.m. when clocks begin ticking backward from T-43 hours. Liftoff is set for July 11 at 7:39 p.m.

Engineers Narrow In on Cause of Endeavour Hydrogen Leak

Sun, 21 Jun 2009 10:40:29 AM EDT

Space Shuttle Program Manager John Shannon says engineers believe they now understand why a hydrogen gas vent line has been leaking, causing shuttle Endeavour's STS-127 mission to be postponed twice. He says a plate that attaches the vent line to Endeavour's external fuel tank is slightly misaligned and that's allowing a small leak to happen during the fueling process.

Teams at NASA Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39A are taking precise measurements of the attaching plate during

Endeavour Launch delayed until July

Endeavour Launch delayed until July

At their 3:30am post-scrub news conference, Deputy Shuttle Program Manager Leroy Cain and STS-127 Launch Director Pete Nickolenko addressed the leak during tanking and the decision to the scrub the launch.

The 3 hour tanking, or fueling, procedure was to begin at 8:15pm but was delayed until a little after 11pm last night due to thunderstorms in launch pad area at KSC.  Tanking cannot begin if there are electrical storms within 5 miles of the launch pad.  The launch team was confident that tanking could begin at 11 and that they could make up launch preparation time in other areas of the countdown.  But a little over an hour into the tanking procedure, higher than the maximum allowable  hydrogen levels at the Ground Umbilical Carrier Plate prompted STS-127 Launch Director Peter Nickolenko to scrub the launch.

Endeavour Liftoff Scrubbed; Briefing is Planned

Wed, 17 Jun 2009 02:20:57 AM EDT

The Latest from NASA.gov:

Space shuttle Endeavour's STS-127 launch today was officially scrubbed at 1:55 a.m. EDT when the same type of gaseous hydrogen leak at the Ground Umbilical Carrier Plate occurred. This is the same location where a similar leak resulted in a launch scrub on June 13. Vent valve troubleshooting took place for about an hour before it became clear the problem could not be solved.

Endeavour's next launch attempt for its STS-127 mission is targeted for July 11 at 7:39 p.m. EDT.

There will be a briefing on NASA TV no earlier than 3:30 a.m. EDT with Deputy Space Shuttle Program Manager LeRoy Cain and Shuttle Launch Director Mike Leinbach. Watch it live at http://www.nasa.gov/ntv
